If you are looking for an experience that perfectly balances scientific wonder with breathtaking natural beauty, Biosphere 2 in Oracle, Arizona, is an absolute must-visit. From the moment I stepped onto the grounds, I knew I was in for something special, but I didn't realize how much my perspective on our own planet would shift. First Impressions: Defining Our World Walking into the visitor center, I had a burning question: "Who or what is Biosphere 1?" The young lady at the desk was incredibly welcoming and sharp. She explained that Biosphere 1 is actually Earth itself—the very ground we were standing on. She clarified that Biosphere 2 was designed to be a smaller, controlled version of our massive home. This "lightbulb moment" immediately gave me a better understanding of the scale of these STEM projects and set the stage for the rest of the tour. Exploring the Biomes As we moved through the facility, I was struck by how "real" everything felt. The environments—or biomes—were incredibly reflective of natural society. We journeyed through: A Lush Rainforest: Complete with the humidity and dense "jungle" atmosphere you’d expect in the tropics. The Fog Desert: A stark, beautiful contrast to the greenery. The Ocean View: Seeing a million-gallon coral reef inside a desert structure is surreal. History and Hospitality The history here is fascinating. Built in the late '80s, it was originally a daring experiment where "Biospherians" lived inside to test the feasibility of space colonization. Today, managed by the University of Arizona, it’s a premier site for climate research. Throughout the tour, brief movies do an excellent job of detailing this timeline. The workers were also a highlight—very friendly, welcoming, and excellent at explaining the various exhibits. Room for Growth While the tour is educational, I did notice there isn't a lot of hands-on learning activity. As someone inspired by the greenery, I would have loved the opportunity to purchase a plant or seeds from the gift shop to take a piece of the experience home. I also think offering specialized classes on sustainability or desert gardening would be a fantastic addition to their programming! 🏜️ Pro-Tips for Your Visit Because you are essentially traveling through different "worlds," you need to be prepared: Dress in Layers: This is crucial. You will experience the dry heat of the Arizona desert, the 80%+ humidity of the rainforest, and the cool breezes of the technical "lungs" area. A lightweight, moisture-wicking base with a removable zip-up is ideal. Wear Walking Clothes: This is a sprawling campus with stairs and varied terrain. Wear sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes. Hydration is Key: Even when you are inside the glass, you are in the desert. Bring plenty of water and stay hydrated! Sun Protection: You will walk between different glass structures outdoors; don't forget your hat and sunscreen.

I wanted to be more positive about thus review,, but simply can't do it. I did this tour about 25 years ago and loved it. Seeing all the mechanical workings with the air handlers and the "lung" was informative. Being able to see a lot of behind the scenes areas was fascinating. Hearing stories about the "biosphereans" who were involved in the original experiment was what made the facility what it was. Now, none of that. Other than a little walk through the kitchen and theater areas, it was pretty much a glorified botanic garden tour. And, not a very good one at that. It pretty much seemed all the biomes pretty much blended together and there was little difference between areas. It seemed guava and coffee plants were located throughout the biosphere. It seemed plants were simply thrown in that would grow in certain areas. It all seemed chaotic and like an experiment gone wrong. The app works, but a real tour guide can answer questions and you can interact with them. I thought you could just listen to the tour, but you needed to see what they were showing on the screen at times. I want to see it in real life, not on a screen. Arrows were marked on the ground so that was easy to follow. The information presented was pretty much all of what is being done now. Sorry, but I am much more interested in the history and the original experience than what is currently being done. Staff was indifferent to say the least. The staff member in the kitchen was great. Easy to talk to and answered questions. The registration area was a disgrace. There were three staff members in the desk area you had to walk past when leaving. They didn't even acknowledge us. They were more interested in asking each other what they did for Thanksgiving. Sad, really. Could say å lot more, but will end it here. Definitely not worth the money (currently) and have had my fill of this site.

This has been on my bucketlist for quite some time and finally today, we toured the Biosphere! Very impressed with this facility and the work and science that goes along with managing this whole ecosystem and in the middle of the desert at that! Love the whole history of how this biodome came about in the early 90s. A must visit!

This is a neat experience for a field trip and my kids definitely learned a few interesting facts during our self guided tour. It’s $15.00 for students and it takes 1 1/2 hours tops to walk through.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect but somehow my expectations were exceeded. I enjoyed being able to set my own pace to tour the facility with the self guided audio tour. One thing I was not aware of was that the app needed to download 226 steps to be able to function. The full download took about 30 minutes so just keep that in mind. Open the app and let it update prior to arrival. Super informative and interesting way to spend a few hours.
