It pains me to write this review as I’ve been going to this YMCA with great pride for the past 4 years. But on 2/26/26, my bike was stolen (chain bolt-cut) from the bike rack located outside the YMCA directly in front of a camera attached to the building. After sharing the matter with Zachary, a director or manager of the downtown Y, he proceeded to act nearly oblivious to the camera’s existence so I had to personal direct him to where it was located. In hopes of getting video footage for a police report on the stolen bike. Zachary proceeded to do a familiar song and dance about relaying this up the ladder in hopes of getting me an answer. Flash forward 30 minutes where he reveals that the camera not only does NOT work, but that to make things right he would offer me 50% off my next month’s membership. And reassured me that IT was expeditiously trying to upgrade the camera system for future incidents. Now not only was this offer completely meaningless, and borderline offensive as it mimics a recent deal they’ve been offering first time members, it’s becoming a reasonable pattern of his management of this YMCA. A gym that I experienced zero issues with under the previous leadership of Alyssa and Kylie. For context, two weeks ago or so, I requested to leave my bike inside the facilities as it was about to rain and was late enough that the gym was fairly empty. I was promptly told no because they wouldn’t be able to house the bike securely. Fair enough, so I shared that the bike rack outside would benefit from a canopy or structure to avoid rain and maybe even the hotter days in PHX. I was told my suggestion would be relayed up the ladder by one of the managers/directors, Zachary, but did not hear back on the matter until two weeks later when I shared that my bike had been stolen. Could they move the bike rack inside where they have ample space? Of course! Would it be easier to bemoan a lack of resources instead and do nothing?Absolutely! Long story short, I would recommend NOT parking your bike at this YMCA as the camera in the parking lot is merely a prop and the leadership will do next to nothing but offer crocodile tears if something does occur. In a similar vein, I wouldn’t trust having belongings in your car there for the same reasons. The rest of the staff is simply wonderful but that clearly becomes diluted the higher up you go

I’ve spent time around a lot of nonprofit facilities in the Valley, and this one stands out for consistency. The space is clean, staff are present and attentive, and programs feel intentional rather than slapped together. You can tell there’s real thought put into safety and community trust, which matters when families are counting on you week after week.

Overall, the Downtown YMCA is a solid gym with good facilities and a welcoming atmosphere. The equipment is well-maintained, and the staff are friendly and helpful. It’s a great place to get a workout in, whether you’re into weightlifting, cardio, or taking advantage of the group fitness classes. However, one area that could use improvement is the consistency of the operating hours. Currently, the gym is open from 5:30 AM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday, but it closes at 7 PM on Fridays. This inconsistency can be frustrating for members who want to maintain a regular schedule throughout the workweek. It would be much more convenient if the gym adopted consistent weekday hours — ideally from 5 AM to 9 PM Monday through Friday. That kind of reliability would go a long way in supporting members with busy or variable schedules. Despite that, the Downtown YMCA is a great community fitness center, and with a few small changes, it could be even better.

Where do I start? From Kylie on down the entire staff is absolutely amazing. Alyssa and Alicia and Brandy and Sabrina and Cesar and Kiyanna who can forget Miss Grace! Very thankful for all of them, also thankful for all the support staff that always keeps the club really clean and smelling nice and never too hot never too cold. Love you all thank you!

I've been a long-time "Y" member and have seen this location go through a lot of changes, but I love that they have always kept the basement gym in tact (aka...the Dungeon). The cardio machines on the main floor are well maintained and the heavy weights in the basement keep getting heavier (for some reason)! The staff are first class people who have always been helpful to me and are usually very happy to greet guests.
